Under Cally’s leadership, Microsoft Hong Kong was awarded “The Best Company for Women” at the 15th Women of Influence Conference & Awards 2018 by American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.
Cally was made to understand the real power of Jim Collins’ “Level 5 Leadership” when she was amalgamating herself into the Microsoft culture. She was introduced to this leadership concept during her EMBA studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
This followed Cally’s biggest decision in her professional life joining Microsoft Hong Kong in 2017 after 27 years of what she considered as a comfort zone. At her first meeting with the company’s Greater China leadership, she asked the team to provide her with relevant information so she could put a nice presentation together. She thought it was the best way from her experience of the last 27 years!
“I soon realised that this was not the preferred management style over there. At Microsoft, a leader is expected to guide and provide opportunities for others to become the best they can be,” Cally recalls this epiphany that she was able to draw from her EMBA experience.
Cally fully embraces the advice of Prof. Andrew Chan, the EMBA programme Co-Director, “Monetary rewards are the consequence not the cause. If you do the right things, it will lead to the right results. As long as you create value for others, rewards will follow.” She has taken this to heart and adopted it as her motto.
All these learnings have helped her tremendously as she forayed into uncharted territory at Microsoft. She has to overcome a huge learning curve while the company is transforming itself from a software company to one that provides solutions for the world of “Intelligent Edge”. It has to stay relevant and competitive amidst the new trends of AI, mixed reality and quantum computing.
As the macro environment continues to change, Cally indeed sees it important for companies and individuals alike to remain relevant and competitive. “The key is in developing a ‘Growth Mindset’. We need to learn and act fast, embrace challenges, understand diversity and inclusion, and accept and learn from mistakes and criticisms,” she details the essence of success. This coincides nicely with her learnings in the EMBA programme as well as the Microsoft values she is now operating on.
Conrad Wong | “Prof. Chan’s Left-Right Circles Theory has had an immense impact on me that will last a lifetime. I have been applying his theory in every aspect of my life.”
REC Green Technologies Co., Ltd., subsidiary of Yau Lee Holdings Ltd., was awarded “The Hanson Supreme Grand Award” and “The Best Presentation Award” on Energy Saving Championship Scheme by EMSD in 2019.
Trained as an engineer, Conrad needed an upgrade in his management skills to help him move up the management ranks. He saw taking up the EMBA programme by The Chinese University of Hong Kong a very useful step towards this.
Among the courses, Conrad found Strategic Marketing the most useful. “Prof. Chan’s Left-Right Circles Theory has had an immense impact on me that will last a lifetime. I have been applying his theory in every aspect of my life. In business, I always think about the customers first. At home, I also treat my wife as my most important customer. Happy wife, happy life. The same theory works there giving me a much better life ever since,” exclaims a happy husband. Along with inspirations from I-Ching《易經》 , Conrad found impacts on him as a person are indescribable.
Another surprising impact is in his network from his EMBA class even after 20 odd years from his graduation. “I did receive special attention from one of my classmates who was the head nurse in the hospital. My alumni circle is not only businessfriendly but also life-saving,” Conrad quips.
Resolving a crisis in 2007 as President of the Hong Kong Construction Association, Conrad was able to draw on the teachings of Prof. Lee, Prof. Chan and Prof. Mun to help him in the negotiation and reach an agreement with the workers on strike. “I couldn’t have done it without having attended the EMBA courses,” he recalls how his improved soft skills helped.
“The world is changing faster than ever before but at the same time presents ever more opportunities for us. A young executive must understand the trends and the reasons behind. I believe this is why we need to constantly upgrade ourselves to meet the challenges,” Conrad gives a reason for continuous learning.

Harold Yip | “My EMBA friends spared no effort in giving me valuable advices, influencing me appreciably as I adopted a mindset to become an entrepreneur.”
Co-founder & Executive Director, Secure Information Disposal Services Limited
(EMBA Class of 2001)
Secure Information Disposal Services Ltd. was the first recycling company in carbon management in Hong Kong, and was granted “The CarbonCare® Champion” by Carbon Care Asia Ltd. in 2011 and 2013.
After more than 10 years of essentially the same work, Harold was looking for a breakthrough in his career. As he searched for the right MBA course that would take him to the next level, he found the CUHK EMBA programme a great match to his expectations.
During the course, he particularly enjoyed learning the I-Ching《易經》 management thinking. As he practises the various approaches to business from the hexagrams, he also adopts the theories as a business philosophy on the premise of seeing change as a constant.
I-Ching《易經》 also helped Harold tackle crises during his time as a manager and entrepreneur. “It helps me to calm down, analyse the situation and develop options to resolve problems,” he details how it can help.
Besides, the Left-Right Circles Theory initiated by Prof. Andrew Chan serves him extremely well in the context of constantly reviewing his market needs and core competencies.
Harold also found his EMBA network having a significant impact on him as he made his career moves from consumer goods to wastes and recycling. “I lacked customer and industry knowledge at the beginning, and I had to consult different people. My EMBA friends spared no effort in giving him valuable advices, influencing me appreciably as I adopted a mindset to become an entrepreneur. All along, they also gave me great spiritual support,” he remembers his friendships very fondly.
Harold is realising his dream as a founder of a recycling company in the green industry. He dreamt of setting up the first recycling pulp mill for beverage cartons in Hong Kong. His dream is now coming true after 9 years of hard work and persistence! Harold credits the EMBA programme for making this a reality.
Many German companies, including global famous brands and hidden champions, have a long legacy and they consistently follow best practices developed over the years with strong commitment on product excellence. Most importantly, cultural heritage and innovation have contributed to the great success of German companies which strive to sustain and develop in this fast-changing world. To gain an in-depth understanding of the business practices and challenges of this nation, the EMBA Class of 2019 undertook a field trip to Germany in June 2019. The trip was an integral part of a core course entitled “Global Business and Management Field Study.” This course gives participants the opportunity to travel outside Hong Kong and gain exposure to different national environments and business operations. Previous EMBA graduates have carried out field studies in major cities in China, Singapore, the UK, Korea, Japan, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, the US, Israel and Denmark.

Greater China EMBA Elite Study Week (Hong Kong, May 2019)
To widen students’ perspective in Greater China, the programme partnered with the EMBA Programmes of Peking University and the National Taiwan University to conduct the “Greater China EMBA Elite Study Week,” which was the first of its kind worldwide. The three universities are taking turns to host a study week in their home regions. The programme strategically provided a platform for the three groups of EMBA participants in Greater China to interact and develop friendships.

Amy Chan | “You need to unlearn, relearn and learn for a better future.”
Executive Manager, Racing Development Board/ Headmistress,
Apprentice Jockeys’ School
The Hong Kong Jockey Club
(EMBA Class of 2014)
In today’s fast-moving information era, I am keenly aware of the importance of being an agent for change. I thus decided that I needed more inspiration at work and in the community work in which I was involved. I am of the opinion that learning is life-long in nature. Accordingly, I looked into various short courses, but none offered what I was looking for. It was not until I met Professor Andrew Chan at a function that I realised the CUHK EMBA programme was the one for me. I wanted to equip myself with better skills and become more creative to lead my team in facing the challenges ahead.
As Professor Chan said: “You need to unlearn, relearn and learn for a better future.” I agree completely with this principle. The programme has helped me consolidate the knowledge I have gained through real-life experience in my job area and back it up with solid theories. Moreover, I have gained valuable insights through interaction with my classmates and professors. They are all professionals and executives from various industries, and I have found them highly knowledgeable and interesting. The programme experience has exceeded my expectations. Not only do the professors help me hone the critical skills required for success at work, but I treasure the time spent with my classmates, just like I did in my old school days. The class produced a rare book, and we sang the theme song for the CUHK EMBA 20th anniversary. Both will become great memories of my time at CUHK.
